Umut kesinlikle gereklidir ama çoğu zaman hayal kırıklığına yol açar

Daha önce “umut” hakkında düşüncelerimi “gelecek mi? bugün mü?” başlıklı yazımda kısaca dile getirmiştim. Bugün umut (hope) için düşünürler, yazarlar, ünlüler, siyasetçiler neler söylemiş diye kısa bir tura çıktım. Bunun için en güzel kaynak Wikiquote.

İlk olarak Alexander Dumas‘ın sözleri gözüme çarptı. “All human wisdom is summed up in these two words — wait and hope” diyordu. “Beklemek ve umut” ya da “umutla beklemek”. Kendimi düşündüm. Gerçekten son zamanlarda (yapmamam gerektiği halde) yaptığım tek şey beklemek ve umut etmekti.

Bundan başka, 1993 yılında Capcom firmasının oyun haline getirdiği cizgi karakter Mega Man “As long as I’m standing, there’s hope” demişti. Hayatta her zaman umut veren birilerinin olduğu gerçeğini anlatıyordu bana. Kimi zaman bir arkadaş, kimi zaman bir aile üyesi, sevgili ya da hiç tanımadığınız birisi. Birçok insanın hayatını da şekillendiren bu kişilerdi aslında. Çünkü 1883-1957 yılları arasında yaşamış Yunan şair ve romancı Nikos Kazantzakis “I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free” diyerek umutların insanları bağımsızlıktan alı koyduğunu anlatıyordu.

Bu noktada başka bir sonuca dikkat etmem gerekti. Bu “kendimi haklı çıkarma” çabalarımı farkeden değerli bir insan, Warhammer 40K oyununun da sloganlarından olan “”Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment” sözünü hatırlattı  ve umutla beklemenin sonunda hayal kırıklığı gerçeği olduğunun göz ardı edilememesi gerektiğini belirtti.  (yazının başlığındaki sözler de ona ait). Şu sözler de onu doğrular nitelikteydi; “In this uncertain space between birth and death … we need hope as surely as we need food and water, love and friendship. The trick, however, is to remember that hope is a perilous thing, that it’s not a steel and concrete bridge across the void between this moment and a brighter future. Hope is no stronger than tremulous beads of dew strung on a filament of spider web, and it alone can’t long support the terrible weight of an anguished mind and a tortured heart” fakat, Martin Luther King ” We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope” yani “ne olursa olsun umudunu yitirmemelisin” diye fısıldadı bana.
